School Trips |
On 4 December, we attended an explosive tectonics conference, sharpening our minds on earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes. Throughout the talk, we were able to gain a deeper understanding of our A-Level curriculum, specifically case studies linked to tectonics.
We were especially interested in the recent Icelandic eruptions: Fagradalsfjall (2021-23) + Sundhnukar (2023-24). It was interesting to learn the innovative and sustainable lava defence barriers which protect key infrastructure like the Blue Lagoon Spa, Svartsengi Power Station and the International Airport at Keflavik.
The talk also provided us with an insight on future possible careers after meeting a geophysicist who informed us about interesting new ways to measure earthquakes.
She highlighted how she maximised all her skills, which guided her to her current career path. Overall, we especially enjoyed learning about tsunamis as this year marked the 20th Anniversary of the Boxing Day Tsunami, the most catastrophic tectonic event to date.
