Black History Month 2024

Reclaiming Narratives

This year, the theme for Black History Month was ‘Reclaiming Narratives’.

We celebrated this event in school through an extended assembly led by our diversity and inclusion student ambassadors: they shared the narratives of men and women of colour who had significantly contributed to British Society like Walter Tull and Mary Secole.

They listened to a beautiful and stirring rendition of “I know where I have been” sung by a sixth form student.

During three PSHE lessons, they watched the documentary series created by Professor David Olusugu entitled: ‘Black Britians: A forgotten History’, which charts the first arrival of black people to Britian during the Roman invasion to the docking of Empire Windrush during the post-war era.

Around the school, we further documented the contributions of men and women of colour to British society through A3 posters in every key building.

The library celebrated Black History Month by showing pupils different types of literature by black authors and poets. The library was decorated with poems by inspirational black poets, and we had images and short descriptions of inspirational black people such as Mae Jemison and Professsor Dame Elizabeth Anionwu.

We also had a display of books that are important to read during Black History Month, with short descriptions given about each book to help pupils choose which they would like to read.

Outside of the Library, we have begun working on a long-term goal in creating discussion about Shakespeare and race; how these two categories overlap and why they are important to discuss together.
