On Tuesday 17 December all the English A Level students went to a writing workshop at the British Library. Novelist and Royal Literary Fund Fellow Kate Worsley ran the workshop which covered identifying different styles of writing and how to plan, structure and write a successful academic essay. She also discussed building a critical argument, writing to a deadline and emphasised the necessity of proofreading before handing work in. It was a practical workshop, involving a lot of writing and editing and sharing our knowledge.
The day also included a tour of the British Library – a particular highlight was the Treasures Room where we saw the earliest edition of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and Shakespeare’s Folio. We also went into one of the Reading Rooms of the British Library and were able to take a photograph, outside the largest atlas in the world (before 2012) presented to Charles II in 1660 after his restoration to the throne following the Civil War.
The day was informative, entertaining and an excellent way of reinforcing and building on critical essay writing and coursework skills so essential for A Level English.
