Charles Dickens Museum Trip

Over the last two weeks of December, five Year 10 English classes travelled to Russell Square to visit the Charles Dickens Museum to support their study of A Christmas Carol.

At the museum, students were split into groups and were taught all about the world Charles Dickens was living in when he wrote his novels. They learnt about his childhood, his time spent working in factories, and his life as a writer in London. Students also explored what life was like in Victorian workhouses, which were designed to house and support the poor during this era.

The highlight of the trip was the guided tour of Charles Dickens’ house. From the servants’ quarters to the drawing room, complete with festive Christmas decorations, students were able to fully immerse themselves in Dickens’ life and times. They even saw the room where A Christmas Carol was written, as well as a section of the original draft, which was particularly exciting.

Our students were incredibly respectful throughout the visits and engaged enthusiastically with the activities and discussions. The trip was a fantastic opportunity to bring their learning to life, and we are confident it will greatly enrich their understanding of Dickens’ work back in the classroom.
