Y10 visit the Charles Dickens Museum

Leora, reflects on the Year 10 trip to the Charles Dickens Museum in support of their English Literature GCSE studies.

The Charles Dickens Museum was such an educational and brain- stimulating experience. It was an excellent opportunity to use and revise my ‘A Christmas Carol’ knowledge and apply it to the visit.

Throughout our visit we were accompanied by a kind guide from the museum who led us when going around the house and provided context for each room that we were in.

The first room we visited was Charles Dickens’ drawing room (which is a room for where you host guests). There were various paintings and the museum guide passed around an object that looked like a pair of binoculars (I now know that they are called opera glasses) and she explained their use- which is to see more clearly when you go to watch plays. Majority of the rooms contained paintings that depicted the narratives in his books.

The room that I found really interesting was his daughter’s room. It had a timeline at the front of the room that outlined the key moments in Dickens’ life. This was an amazing moment to remind myself of the important context behind the novella. It explored Dickens’ privileged childhood that soon turned melancholic and how him and his family managed to get out of the trouble that they were in.

Overall, I would really recommend to visit this Museum when you get the chance. Aside from the backstories behind each room, it’s a very beautiful house that can tell you a lot about Britain (more specifically London) during the Victorian era.
