Dismantling of the Organ

Mander Organ Builders arrived yesterday 2 November 2026 to start the week long process of dismantling the organ.  We are incredibly grateful to one of our parents Marcin Urban for his incredible photography, recording this process, which you can see by scrolling down to the latest update section of the project webpage on Connect here:

Restoration of our Loret Organ | Sacred Heart High School Hammersmith.

As you can see, the pipes are being labelled and loaded into long wooden boxes on the floor of the chapel, ready for their journey to Canterbury. Some of the pipes are themselves oblong and wooden, others are lead. Many of the lead pipes have been damaged -its unclear how, but perhaps as they have collapse upon themselves.  They have been held upright by strips of canvas tied in a knot.

Occassionally the workmen have been blowing into pipes that they have taken out of the organ case, creating a momentary blast of huge sound!

On Wednesday, about 70 of our students will be joining Dr William McVicker in the chapel to hear a little about the history of organs and how they work. He is bringing some huge pipes with him from the organ at the Royal Festival Hall and students will be able to see pipework from our own organ close up.
