The wait is over! We are delighted to announce the winners of this year’s World Book Day Costume Competition:

Year 7: Zara A
Year 8: Brianna‑Jane R‑B
Year 9: Teresa Lo, Olivia H, Gadea F
Year 10: Alexandra M
Year 11: Gabrielle S‑I, Maame Y‑A, Yomali V‑M
Year 12: Anjali S, Martyna S, Julia K
Year 13: Maxine M, Mar P

The creativity and enthusiasm shown on the day were truly outstanding, and our Librarian, Ms Spek, had an awfully difficult time choosing the winners!

While the costume contest is now behind us, it’s important to reflect on the true purpose of World Book Day: to foster a lifelong love of reading, which plays a vital role in children’s growth and development. The day also highlights the importance of ensuring that every child, regardless of background or means, has access to their own books. Over the past two weeks, our school has hosted a series of events and initiatives reflecting these values.

We had the pleasure of welcoming authors Sue Wallman, Marianne Levy, and Sofia Blake, who delivered engaging talks to a range of year groups. They discussed their novels, their writing processes, and even the practical realities of being an author, including how authors earn a salary! Year 12 were especially fortunate to enjoy an in‑depth session with Sofia Blake, who, having recently graduated from King’s College London, shared honest insights into post‑university life and pursuing a career in writing.

Throughout the week, pupils were encouraged to explore our beautifully decorated library and make use of the resources available. Each student received a token redeemable for one free World Book Day title or £1/£1.50 off a book of their choice from participating retailers and supermarkets.

The library also hosted a variety of creative and imaginative activities, including “Guess the Book by Its Opening Line,” a blind‑date‑with‑a‑book lunch event, a Scavenger Hunt, and a grand World Book Day debate organised by the Debate Team and reported by our Magazine Club.

We hope that students continue to celebrate reading, explore new stories, and appreciate the power of literature long after World Book Day has passed.
