A full colour book produced by the school, exploring the extraordinary history of our site here in Hammermsith, from the 1600s to the present day.
Starting with the Reformation, the story explores the period when it was illegal to be Catholic and how 'The Nunnery at Hammersmith' operated in secret behind the wall. Nuns used pseudonyms and were arrested and imprisioned. At one point a specific group of Benedictine nuns moved in here having narrowly escaped execution in the French Revolution. The Diocese eventually demolish the nunnery and build a seminary and chapel which is later purchased by the Societry of the Sacred Heart.
The Society's own history is reviewed - its ethos and commitment to education; what happened to them in France; and how a small group of sisters moved in here in 1893 to found a school. Key dates in the history of our school are highlighted within the context of the various Mother Superiors who presided here. Contemporary images of the school are also included.
The first edition of this book sold out and this second edition includes brief reference to some new information and a new full page photo of our cloister garden at the back.
