The Goal of Social Awareness that Impels to Action

by Teresa L & Anna R, Year 8

Social Awareness is one of the key components of everyday life. It is a skill that allows us to empathise with others and relate to different backgrounds. As Catholics, it is an essential part of our faith. We are taught by Jesus through his teachings and sermons, that we are all brothers and sisters, and that although we are all different and unique, we are all equal in God’s eyes.

In Galatians 3:26-29, it says “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith...There is      neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

This shows the importance of equality and how we should treat each other equally. Are we treating others with respect and equality? Are we following Jesus’ teachings?

At our school, each form class receives a poster to help us  think and reflect on ways we could apply Jesus’ teaching in our everyday lives. Some of our ideas:

  • Thinking twice before saying something that might sound unkind.
  • Thinking if you are saying something important or nice to another person.
  • Thinking about ways we can make others feel good.
  • Empathising with others and finding ways to support those in need.
  • Trying to be fair and non-judgmental.
  • Demonstrating kindness and compassion, thinking about how others are feeling.
  • Thinking about ways to protect our world and to alleviate the climate crisis.

We also discussed in our forms, why social awareness is so important.

Social awareness is important because we are able to connect with others on a deeper level, and understand their motivations and beliefs. Social awareness is a skill that we must work to build in ourselves and share with others. It is about learning from our mistakes, knowing what is just and unjust, and facing all our challenges with faith and hope, leading us to make better decisions.
