We are so fortunate to be one of the selected schools in the Wimbledon Ball Girl and Boy Programme. Each year, our SHHS girls do us proud as they rise to the top of their groups through months of hard work and dedication. It is not unusual during the winter months to see the girls practising their ball rolling before school, at break time, and during lunchtime.
This year, Jaya S and Elizabeth T in Year 9 did just that. They have been outstanding and, in return, enjoyed the experience of a lifetime at Wimbledon. Jaya had an absolutely amazing second week. Based on the show courts throughout the week, she had the opportunity to ball girl for Tsitsipas, Jamie Murray and Barami, with the highlight being her place in the Guard of Honour for the Men's Singles Final this weekend. Elizabeth also ball-girled for Tsitsipas, and her highlight was being on court for one of Venus Williams' matches.
The honour of becoming a ball girl does not come lightly. It involves nearly a year of commitment to extensive training, with the constant possibility of being dropped from the programme at any stage. However, the girls would say that the rewards have most definitely been worth it, and we look forward to welcoming next year's applicants in the Autumn Term.
